Copyright Registration

What is Copyright?

Copyright is a form of intellectual property protection granted to the creators of original works. It includes literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, and cinematograph films and sound recordings. Copyright ensures that the original creator has exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, or license the work.

In India, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957, and the rules framed under it. Copyright registration is not mandatory, but it provides legal proof of ownership and makes it easier to enforce rights in case of disputes.

Why is Copyright Registration Important?

While the mere creation of an original work gives you copyright protection, official registration strengthens your claim. Here are some key benefits:

1.Legal Evidence of Ownership

Registered copyright acts as prima facie evidence in court, making it easier to prove authorship and ownership.

  1. Public Record of Ownership

Copyright registration creates a public record, which establishes your legal claim and helps deter infringement.

  1. Protection Against Infringement

You can file a copyright infringement lawsuit and claim damages if your registered work is copied or used without permission.

  1. Commercial Use & Licensing

A registered copyright can be licensed or sold, opening up monetization opportunities and protecting your commercial interests.
